This is a sad day.
As we arrived at the house to make our offer presentation, Walter called to tell us that the selling agent just told him that there was another offer put in. Since we offered first, he got to present first... but the outlook was no good, as you can imagine with any multiple-offer situation. The other people were a family that looked to be in their late 30s with two young boys. After their agent made their presentation Walter was called back in to find out that the seller was going to work with their offer instead.
And that was that. No house for us. As we gathered ourselves up to leave, the woman who was waiting on the sidewalk with her husband flashed a very big evil grin. Grr.

hey jen,
that's AWFUL! in my meager real estate experience (ok, i don't really have any), they're supposed to tell you WELL IN ADVANCE that they have another offer, and they're supposed to EXTEND the time you have to develop ANOTHER offer that's more appealing. i think something shady went on here...
i'm sure something even better will come along soon - with a more ethical agent representing it!!
thanks jill! that makes me feel a lot better.
our realtor even said that the selling agent seemed very inexperienced and made a lot of mistakes. he said when he was presenting the offer, she read it over without explaining it to her client and didn't ask any questions (like if we were flexible with the price or closing date).
we put in our offer monday night and this other offer came in tuesday afternoon. so the 2nd people knew we had made an offer and probably had time to strategize their offer. seems unfair to us for sure! the second buying agent shouldn't have even brought her clients in knowing that they'd have to pay more since there was already an offer before theirs. at least my guy is looking out for our best interests!
